What this tip calculator does

Splitting a bill at the table usually involves a guess, a rounding error and someone overpaying. This calculator takes the bill, applies the tip percentage you choose and divides the result evenly, so everyone knows exactly what to put in. The round-up option is for cash: it lifts each share to the next dollar and shows what tip percentage that works out to.

How to calculate a tip

Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100, and each person pays (bill + tip) ÷ number of people.

Example: an $85.50 bill with an 18% tip shared by two people. Tip = 85.50 × 0.18 = $15.39; the total is $100.89, or $50.45 each. With rounding on, each person pays $51, the total becomes $102 and the tip rises to $16.50, an effective 19.3%.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States 15% to 20% of the bill is standard for table service, with 20% now common in cities. Tip 10% to 15% for counter or takeout service if you tip at all, and 18% to 20% for large groups, which many restaurants add automatically. Customs differ abroad: service is often included in Europe, and tipping is not expected in Japan.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional etiquette, while many people simply tip on the total for convenience. On a $85.50 bill with 8% tax the difference at 18% is about $1.23. Enter whichever amount you prefer in the bill field.

How do I calculate a tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then adjust: double it for 20%, or add half of it again for 15%. For $85.50, 10% is $8.55, so 20% is $17.10 and 15% is about $12.83.

What does "round up" do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar so nobody deals with coins, then recalculates the tip from the new total. The effective tip percentage is shown so you can see how generous the rounded amount is.
