How course grades are weighted
Most courses do not treat every assessment equally: a final exam might be worth 30% of the grade while each homework set is worth 2%. A weighted grade reflects those proportions. This calculator computes it from any list of scores and weights and, in the second mode, turns the question around to tell you what you need on the final.
Formulas and worked examples
Weighted grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weight
With the default values: 92 × 20 + 85 × 30 + 88 × 20 + 90 × 30 = 1,840 + 2,550 + 1,760 + 2,700 = 8,850. Dividing by the total weight of 100 gives 88.5%, a B.
Final exam needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal.
If you are averaging 85% on the 70% of the course already graded and want 90% overall with a final worth 30%: (90 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7%. An A is out of reach unless the exam offers extra credit, but 80% overall needs only (80 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 68.3%.
How to use this calculator
- In weighted mode, enter each graded item with its score and weight. Percentages, points out of 100 or any consistent scale work.
- Weights can be percentages that sum to 100, or raw points; the calculator normalises them either way.
- In final-exam mode, the “current grade” is your weighted average of everything except the final. Compute it in weighted mode first if you are unsure.
Tips
- Drop policies (for example “lowest quiz dropped”) are not applied automatically. Remove the dropped item before calculating.
- To combine several course grades into a term average, use the GPA calculator. For a quick unweighted mean of scores, the average calculator is faster.
- Percent changes between two test scores are easy to compare with the percentage calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the products and divide by the sum of the weights. With homework 92 at 20%, midterm 85 at 30%, project 88 at 20% and final 90 at 30%, the sum is 18.4 + 25.5 + 17.6 + 27 = 88.5, so the course grade is 88.5%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator treats them as relative weights and divides by their total, so 1 and 3 behave like 25% and 75%. This is also how to handle a course where some assessments have not happened yet: enter only the completed items and their weights to see your current standing.
How do I find what I need on the final exam?
Use the “Final exam grade needed” mode. Enter your current average over everything except the final, the weight of the final and the grade you want. The required score is (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. If it is above 100% the target is out of reach; if it is 0 or below you have already secured it.
Which letter grade will I get?
The calculator uses the common US scale: A for 90 and above, B for 80–89, C for 70–79, D for 60–69 and F below 60. Many schools add plus and minus steps or use different cut-offs, so treat the letter as a guide and check your syllabus.
