Feet, inches and centimeters
The United States records height in feet and inches, while almost everywhere else uses centimeters. Medical forms, passports, sports profiles and online shopping often ask for the other system, and converting by hand is fiddly because feet contain 12 inches rather than 10. This converter does the arithmetic exactly and shows the height in all four common forms.
Formulas and worked example
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, and one foot is 12 inches (30.48 cm).
- Feet and inches → cm: cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54
- cm → feet and inches: total inches = cm ÷ 2.54; feet = whole part of (total inches ÷ 12); inches = remainder
Example: 5 ft 9 in = 69 inches. 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm, or 1.7526 m. Going back the other way, 175.26 ÷ 2.54 = 69 inches = 5 feet and 9 inches.
How to use this converter
- Pick the direction, then type the height. Results update instantly, including total inches and meters.
- Fractions of an inch are accepted (for example 5 ft 9.5 in).
- Scroll the chart for a quick lookup of every inch between 4 ft 10 in and 6 ft 8 in; click “Show all” to expand it.
Tips
- Height written as 5'9" means 5 feet 9 inches, not 5.9 feet. 5.9 feet would be about 5 ft 11 in.
- For other length units such as meters, yards or miles, use the unit converter.
- Height in centimeters is the input most health formulas expect; try the BMI calculator or the ideal weight calculator next.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert feet and inches to centimeters?
Turn the height into inches first (feet × 12 + inches), then multiply by 2.54, because one inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm. For 5 ft 9 in: 69 inches × 2.54 = 175.26 cm.
How do I convert centimeters to feet and inches?
Divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12: the whole number is the feet and the remainder is the inches. 180 cm ÷ 2.54 = 70.87 in = 5 ft 10.87 in, usually written as about 5 ft 11 in.
What is 5 feet 9 inches in cm, and what is 170 cm in feet?
5 ft 9 in is 175.26 cm. 170 cm is 66.93 inches, which is 5 ft 6.93 in, or roughly 5 ft 7 in. The reference chart on this page lists every inch from 4 ft 10 in to 6 ft 8 in.
Why do heights in cm sometimes not match the inch value exactly?
Heights are usually rounded to the nearest inch or centimeter. Because 1 inch is 2.54 cm, a height that is “exactly” 5 ft 9 in (175.26 cm) is often recorded as 175 cm, and 175 cm converts back to 5 ft 8.9 in rather than a whole number of inches.
