## What this salary calculator does

Job offers, pay stubs and budgets all quote pay differently: one employer says $25 an hour, another $4,333 a month, a third $52,000 a year. This calculator converts between hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly and annual pay so you can compare offers or work out what a raise means per paycheck.

## How the conversion works

Every figure is first converted to an annual amount, then divided by the number of periods in a year:

- **Annual from hourly** = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year
- **Weekly** = annual ÷ weeks per year; **biweekly** = annual ÷ (weeks ÷ 2)
- **Semi-monthly** = annual ÷ 24; **monthly** = annual ÷ 12; **quarterly** = annual ÷ 4
- **Daily** assumes a five-day week, so a day is hours per week ÷ 5

**Example:** $25 per hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year is 25 × 40 × 52 = **$52,000** a year, which is $4,333.33 a month, $2,166.67 semi-monthly, $2,000 biweekly, $1,000 a week and $200 a day.

## How to use this calculator

1. Enter the amount you are paid and select the period it covers.
2. Set your usual hours per week. Part-time workers should enter their real hours.
3. Reduce the weeks per year if you take unpaid time off.
4. Read the table to see the same pay expressed in every period.

## Things to keep in mind

- Figures are gross pay. Taxes and deductions typically take 20% to 30%.
- Overtime, bonuses and commissions are not included; add them to the annual figure if they are reliable.
- A job with paid vacation and benefits is worth more than the same hourly rate without them.

## **Frequently asked questions **

### **How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?**

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work per week, then by the weeks you work per year. For a full-time job that is hourly rate × 40 × 52 = hourly rate × 2,080. So $25 an hour is $52,000 a year, and a quick mental shortcut is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros.

### **Should I use 52 or 50 weeks?**

Use 52 if you are paid for vacation and holidays, which is typical for salaried employees. Hourly workers who are not paid for time off should enter the weeks they actually work, often 48 to 50. Two unpaid weeks reduce a $25/hour income from $52,000 to $50,000.

### **What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?**

Biweekly means every two weeks, giving 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, for example on the 15th and last day, giving 24 paychecks. Semi-monthly paychecks are therefore slightly larger for the same annual salary, and some months contain three biweekly paydays.

### **Is this before or after taxes?**

All figures are gross pay before income tax, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions and insurance premiums. Take-home pay is typically 70% to 80% of gross depending on your tax bracket, state and benefits.
