## What is a GPA?

A grade point average (GPA) summarises your academic results as a single number. In the United States and many other countries it runs from 0.0 to 4.0: each letter grade maps to a number of grade points, and courses with more credit hours have a bigger influence. Universities use GPA for admissions, scholarships and academic standing, and employers sometimes ask for it on applications.

## Formula and worked example

GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours

**Example** with the default courses: an A (4.0) worth 3 credits gives 12.0 points; a B+ (3.3) worth 4 credits gives 13.2; an A− (3.7) worth 3 credits gives 11.1; a B (3.0) worth 3 credits gives 9.0. The total is 45.3 grade points over 13 credits, so the GPA is 45.3 ÷ 13 = **3.48**.

For a cumulative GPA, your previous GPA is multiplied by its credits to recover the grade points earned so far. Those points and credits are added to this term's before dividing.

## How to use this calculator

- Enter one row per course. The course name is only a label; the grade and credits drive the result.
- Use “+ Add course” for more rows and “Remove” to drop one. Rows with 0 credits are ignored.
- To see your overall GPA after this term, fill in the cumulative section with your previous GPA and the credits it covers.

## Tips and limitations

- This is the common unweighted scale (A+ and A both 4.0). Your institution may use a 4.3 scale, +/- variations or weighted points for honors courses.
- Pass/fail, audited and withdrawn courses usually do not count toward GPA.
- Need the percentage grade for a single course first? Use the [grade calculator](https://methodcalculator.com/grade-calculator), and the [average calculator](https://methodcalculator.com/average-calculator) for a plain mean of scores.

## **Frequently asked questions **

### **How is GPA calculated?**

Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiplied by the course's credit hours, and the products are added up. Dividing that total by the total credit hours gives the GPA. A 3-credit A and a 4-credit B+ therefore contribute 12.0 and 13.2 points over 7 credits.

### **Does an A+ count more than an A?**

On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale used here, both A+ and A are worth 4.0. Some universities award 4.3 for an A+, and many high schools use weighted scales that add points for honors or AP courses. Check your school's policy if your official GPA differs.

### **How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?**

Enter your GPA before this term and the number of credits it is based on in the cumulative section. The calculator converts that GPA back into grade points, adds this term's points and credits, and divides again. A 3.2 GPA over 60 credits plus a 4.0 in a 3-credit course gives 204 ÷ 63 = 3.24.

### **Do pass/fail or withdrawn courses affect GPA?**

Usually not. Courses graded pass/fail, withdrawn courses and transfer credits are normally excluded from the GPA calculation even though the credits may count toward graduation. Leave such courses out of the list.
