## What the date calculator does

This tool answers two everyday questions. First, how much time lies between two dates: the number of days, the same span as weeks plus days or as years, months and days, and the number of working days. Second, what date you land on when you add or subtract a period from a start date, for example 90 days after an invoice date or 6 months before a deadline.

## Method and worked example

**Days between dates:** every calendar day from the start date up to the end date is counted, including leap days. From January 1, 2026 to November 1, 2026 there are **304 days**, which is 43 weeks and 3 days, or 10 months exactly. Business days are counted by skipping every Saturday and Sunday in the same range.

**Adding to a date:** years and months are applied first by moving the month number and keeping the day, then weeks and days are added as a plain number of days. Adding 90 days to November 1, 2026 gives January 30, 2027 (29 days left in November, 31 in December, then 30 days into January).

## How to use this calculator

- Choose “Days between two dates” and enter both dates. Tick the checkbox if both the first and last day should count, as for a booking or a leave request.
- Choose “Add or subtract from a date” to find a deadline, a renewal date or a date a given number of weeks away. Leave unused fields at 0.
- Weekday names are shown so you can see whether a deadline falls on a weekend.

## Tips and limitations

- Public holidays are not excluded from business-day counts; subtract them manually for your country.
- Month arithmetic clamps to the end of shorter months. Adding one month to January 31 gives February 28 or 29, not March 3.
- Only whole days are considered. For hours and minutes between two clock times use the [time calculator](https://methodcalculator.com/time-calculator); for a person's age in years, months and days use the [age calculator](https://methodcalculator.com/age-calculator).

## **Frequently asked questions **

### **Does the calculator count the start day, the end day, or both?**

By default it counts the days from the first date to the second, so January 1 to January 2 is one day. Tick “Include the end day” to count both ends, which gives two days for the same pair. The inclusive count is what you need for questions such as how many days a hotel stay or a rental covers.

### **What are business days?**

Business days are Monday to Friday. The calculator excludes Saturdays and Sundays but does not know about public holidays, which vary by country and year, so subtract any holidays in the period yourself.

### **How are months added to a date at the end of the month?**

Months are added by keeping the same day number. If that day does not exist in the target month, the last day of that month is used, so January 31 plus one month is February 28 or 29. Days and weeks are added after years and months.

### **Why is the number of days between two dates different from 365 times the years?**

Because some years are leap years with 366 days. The calculator counts the real calendar days between the dates, which is why the day count and the years-months-days breakdown may not look like simple multiples of each other.
